Citizen role in Mafia
Also known as: Townsperson, Villager
The baseline Citizens role. No night abilities. Participates in the day discussion and vote, sleeps at night. Goal — find and eliminate all Mafia members through deduction and debate.
Abilities and night actions
Citizen is the most numerous — and the most "plain" — role in Mafia. No night abilities: at night they sleep and wake up with everyone else. The day phase is all the Citizen has. They join discussions, ask questions, accuse, and vote. The Citizen's strength is observation and logic.
How to play
The Citizen's main job is gathering information from other players' speeches and spotting lies. Track (mentally is fine) who accused whom and who defended whom. Mafia often vote in sync to cover their partner — that's a tell.
Don't be afraid to accuse, even at 50% confidence. An active Citizen sets the pace. Quiet Citizens are often picked as the night kill — they're "safe" targets for the Mafia.
If the Seer or Widow reveals themselves, trust them and help protect them with your vote. Their info is more valuable than anything else.
Key ruleWatch voting patterns and slip-ups. Mafia often defend each other or vote in sync — that's noticeable.
This role in Mafia de los Muertos
Mafia de los Muertos has two Citizens per game. They're the backbone of the Citizens team and usually decide the day vote: four Citizen votes against two Mafia — a majority, if they pick the right target.
How AI plays the Citizen — the hardest role for a neural network
A paradox: the easiest role for a human — the Citizen — turns out to be the hardest for an AI. The Citizen has no night ability, no private information, no signal. Just day speech, votes, observation. For an AI this means no structured facts to lean on like «I checked José» or «I know Maria is the Widow». Pure behavioral analysis — exactly the kind of intuition humans deploy and AI has to reconstruct step by step.
What AI Citizens do well. They track voting patterns perfectly: who defended whom, who voted in sync, who pivoted. Modern models — Claude Haiku 4.5, GPT-4.1 Mini, Gemini 3 Flash — hold the full game log in context and reference specific moments: «José defended Maria in round two and agreed to execute her in round three — sharp reversal». Such observations are often accurate.
What AI Citizens do poorly. Psychological reading is out of reach for neural networks. A human sees a Mafia partner getting nervous, using weak phrasing, fumbling names — and knows. AI can't «see» this; every player is just text. The compensation is statistical — models learn over thousands of games that certain speech markers correlate with mafia. Useful in aggregate, weaker than human intuition in a single round.
The brightest moment for an AI Citizen — last words on the chopping block. Your only power: convince the team who the Mafia is, and why. Strong models give a tight bullet list. Weak models go emotional («I'm not Mafia, check José»). No argument — wasted breath.
Playing live alongside AI Citizens? Front-load observations. AI Citizens don't initiate well. If you spot a pattern, say it out loud — they'll pick it up and amplify it in their own votes.
